Preposições de tempo e prazo

Objetivo

Usar as preposições de tempo (at, on, in) e de prazo (from, until, by, during) para falar de releases, sprints, reuniões e janelas de manutenção, evitando as confusões mais comuns entre inglês e português brasileiro.

Explicação

Em inglês, a preposição certa depende do tipo de tempo que você quer expressar. Três pares resolvem a maior parte do trabalho em planejamento:

1. Ponto no tempo — at / on / in.

• at + horário exato:

`The deploy starts at 3 PM.` `The standup is at 9:30.`

• on + dia ou data:

`The release is on Friday.` `The migration is on March 15.`

• in + mês, estação, ano ou período do dia longo:

`The freeze is in June.` `We plan the roadmap in Q3.` `I'll review the PRs in the morning.`

2. Prazo e limite — by / until / from…until (ou from…to).

• by marca o limite final: algo precisa estar pronto até esse momento.

`Please send the report by 5 PM.` `The fix must be merged by Friday.`

• until marca a continuidade de uma ação ou janela:

`The maintenance runs until midnight.` `Please don't deploy until tests pass.`

• from…until / from…to delimita um intervalo:

`The maintenance window is from 2 AM to 4 AM.` `I'm on call from Friday until Sunday.`

3. Dentro de um período — during / in.

• during + evento com começo e fim:

`We can't deploy during the sprint.` `Two bugs appeared during the meeting.`

• in + período genérico:

`I'll finish this in the next sprint.`

Expressões fixas com at. Algumas combinações com `at` não seguem a regra do horário: `at night`, `at noon`, `at midnight`, `at the moment`, `at the end of the sprint`.

Exemplos

Erros comuns

• Dizer `in Friday` por tradução literal do português "na sexta-feira": em inglês o correto é `on Friday`.
• Trocar `by Friday` por `until Friday`: `by` é prazo final (algo precisa estar pronto até), `until` é continuidade de uma ação.
• Usar `in the sprint` quando o sentido é "durante a sprint": para algo que acontece dentro de um evento use `during the sprint`; `in the sprint` costuma soar como "na próxima sprint".
• Confundir `at night` com `in the night`: a expressão fixa é `at night`; `in the night` é incomum.
• Escrever `on 5 PM` porque "5 PM" parece uma data: horário usa `at`, então `at 5 PM`.
• Misturar `from…to` com `from…until`: `from 9 to 5` e `from 9 until 5` são aceitos, mas não `from 9 to until 5`.
• Usar `at` com mês ou ano: `at March` está errado; meses e anos usam `in`.

Depois reformule cada item trocando a preposição e observando se a frase continua fazendo sentido — se não fizer, é sinal de que trocou o sentido (por exemplo, `by` vs `until`).

Resumo

Use `at` para horários, `on` para dias e datas, `in` para meses, estações e anos. Use `by` para prazo final e `until` para continuidade. Use `from…to` ou `from…until` para intervalos e `during` para algo que acontece dentro de um evento. As confusões mais comuns de falantes de PT-BR são `in Friday` (correto: `on Friday`), `until 5 PM` para prazo firme (correto: `by 5 PM`) e `in the sprint` quando o sentido é "durante" (correto: `during the sprint`).

Planning the release

On Monday morning, the team started planning the release. The product manager scheduled the kickoff at 10 AM. The release would go out on Friday at 3 PM. The freeze would start in March, two days before the deploy.

Setting deadlines and windows

Each engineer had to merge their feature by Thursday at 5 PM. After that, the team couldn't push code during the freeze. The maintenance window was from 2 AM to 4 AM on Friday. The deploy had to finish by 3 PM, when the release was scheduled.

During the sprint review

At the sprint review, the team presented the new dashboard. Two small bugs appeared during the demo, but nobody was worried. The team agreed to fix them after the release, not during the deploy. The release went out on time at 3 PM, and the system stayed up all night.
