Paráfrase e simplificação técnica

Objetivo

Reformular explicações técnicas usando paráfrases (in other words, basically, what this means is, to put it simply) para descrever termos difíceis com palavras simples e comunicar conceitos a stakeholders não técnicos como PMs, executivos e clientes.

Explicação

Quando um engenheiro explica um sistema para um PM, executivo ou cliente, o vocabulário muda: jargão vira comparação, termos técnicos viram impacto, e explicações longas viram uma frase. Esse processo se chama paráfrase técnica: re-explicar a mesma ideia com palavras diferentes, em um nível que o ouvinte consegue absorver. Paraphrase não é traduzir termo por termo — é recontar a ideia de um jeito novo, sem perder o significado.

Os quatro padrões principais de paráfrase em inglês técnico:

1. In other words, ... — abre uma reformulação clara do que acabou de ser dito. *The service is rate limiting us. In other words, it only accepts a fixed number of requests per second.*
2. Basically, ... — resume a ideia em uma frase mais curta. *We are sending too many calls. Basically, we are overloading the provider.*
3. What this means is ... — conecta uma explicação técnica ao impacto para o usuário. *The database query is slow. What this means is that the page takes several seconds to load.*
4. To put it simply, ... — sinaliza que a versão a seguir é a mais curta e direta. *To put it simply, about five percent of checkouts failed last Friday.*

Padrões extras muito usados em conversas reais:

• Let me rephrase that: — quando o ouvinte claramente não entendeu e o engenheiro recomeça a explicação.
• The bottom line is ... — fecha a conversa com a conclusão prática. *The bottom line is that we lose customers at checkout.*
• Think of it as ... — usa uma analogia. *Think of it as a bouncer at a club: when the room is full, new people wait at the door.*
• At a high level, ... — abre uma visão geral, sem entrar em detalhes. *At a high level, the system stores results in memory to avoid recomputing them.*
• The long story short is ... — comprime uma explicação longa em uma frase final. *The long story short is that we need to reduce the number of API calls.*

Tom importa. O objetivo não é "dumb down" (simplificar de um jeito condescendente) nem esconder a complexidade. O engenheiro deve mostrar que entende o detalhe, mas escolhe as palavras certas para o público. Sinais de tom ruim incluem *just* (que invalida a complexidade), *simply* (que pode soar arrogante quando o problema é, de fato, difícil) e *obviously* (que pressupõe que o ouvinte deveria saber). Use os padrões de paráfrase, mas mantenha o respeito pelo interlocutor.

Estrutura recomendada em uma conversa com não técnico: (1) começar com uma frase de resumo de alto nível, (2) explicar o problema técnico com *in other words* ou *basically*, (3) traduzir para o impacto com *what this means is*, (4) fechar com a conclusão usando *the bottom line is* ou *the long story short is*. Essa sequência funciona em sincronia, email, post-mortem executivo e mensagens no Slack.

Exemplos

Erros comuns

• Tratar paráfrase como troca de sinônimos: paráfrase é re-explicar a ideia, não substituir uma palavra técnica por outra (jargão por jargão).
• Usar jargão dentro da reformulação: 'In other words, the API endpoint is throttling our throughput' continua opaco para um PM.
• Soar condescendente com 'just' ou 'simply': 'Just increase the quota' invalida a complexidade real do problema.
• Pular a etapa de impacto: explicar o mecanismo técnico sem dizer o que isso significa para o usuário deixa o stakeholder sem ação concreta.
• Usar sempre o mesmo marcador: variar entre in other words, basically, what this means is e to put it simply torna a explicação mais natural.

Prática guiada

Reescreva o parágrafo abaixo para um PM não técnico, usando ao menos dois padrões de paráfrase:

> The latency on the /checkout endpoint increased to 2.4 seconds because the upstream provider is throttling our requests after 100 calls per minute. We are currently exceeding the quota by 30% during peak hours.

Versão reescrita:

> The checkout page is slower than usual. Basically, the payment provider only allows 100 calls per minute, and we are sending about 130. What this means is that about 30% of our requests are delayed. The bottom line is that we need to ask for a higher quota or reduce our own call volume.

Observe: o mecanismo técnico (latency, throttling, quota) virou impacto (slower than usual, requests are delayed, need a higher quota). Os marcadores *basically*, *what this means is* e *the bottom line is* guiam o leitor pela mesma informação, em um nível que ele consegue agir.

Anya knew David was a sharp PM but not a technical person, so she planned to use plain language throughout the conversation. She wrote a short note to herself: avoid jargon, use analogies, and break the problem into small pieces. When David joined the call, Anya started with a one-sentence summary of the issue.

Explaining the technical problem

"The payment provider is rate limiting us," Anya said. "What does that mean?" David asked. Anya answered, "In other words, they only allow a fixed number of requests per second. Once we cross that number, they block the rest for a short time." David nodded and said, "Basically, we are sending too many calls in a short period." "Exactly," Anya replied. Anya then presented two action items: a short-term fix to increase the quota, and a long-term fix to add a cache. "The short version is that we need to ask the provider for a higher limit and reduce our own call volume," she said. David asked, "Can you write this up for the executive team?" "Sure," Anya replied. "I'll send a high-level summary, about a paragraph, with the impact and the plan."
