The explicit layer
During a town-hall demonstration, Riley noticed that the explicit proposal was only one layer of the conversation. The phrase “a storyline” appeared in the discussion; it sounded light, yet the pause that followed suggested hesitation. Rather than overinterpret the signal, Riley asked a precise question and let the answer develop.
The participants disagreed about scope, ownership, and timing. Riley did not flatten the disagreement into a slogan. She reformulated the strongest position, named “a loaded question” as one possible frame, and asked which responsibility each group was actually prepared to carry.
When a joke briefly repaired the rapport, Riley used the opening without losing the difficult point. She connected “to defend a claim”, “a turning point”, and “an agenda” to a reversible next step. The proposal did not erase uncertainty; it gave the group a way to move while remaining answerable for the consequences.
