The explicit layer
During negotiating two possible life plans, Drew noticed that the explicit proposal was only one layer of the conversation. The phrase “BATNA” appeared in the discussion; it sounded light, yet the pause that followed suggested hesitation. Rather than overinterpret the signal, Drew asked a precise question and let the answer develop.
The participants disagreed about scope, ownership, and timing. Drew did not flatten the disagreement into a slogan. She reformulated the strongest position, named “variety” as one possible frame, and asked which responsibility each group was actually prepared to carry.
