Riverside Decision Journal 120: A Connected Story

The need and the evidence

When Yara joined the group for a civic forum in João Pessoa, the group already had a clear need: the cultural center was useful, but people did not always know how to use it. Yara had recently learned “trajectory” and “experience”, and she wanted to turn that idea into a practical plan.

At the first meeting, Yara listened carefully before speaking. She used “think aloud” to connect her experience with the group’s situation, while Ben added “experience” and “reason” as a second perspective. They agreed that the problem was real, although its cause was not completely clear.

The decision

The team then compared two options. One plan used “networking” and “introduction”, while the other depended on “present perfect” and “past simple”. They considered time, cost, and the people affected. In the end, Yara said that “introduction” was the safest choice, but she also accepted one limitation.

After the decision, Ben asked Yara to explain the reasoning in plain language. She gave an example, checked the group’s understanding, and connected the result with “introduce the topic” and “context”. Nobody expected a perfect answer; they needed an honest next step.

Adjustment and reflection

A week later, the group met again. The first action had worked in one part of the cultural center, but it needed adjustment elsewhere. Yara reported “reason” and suggested “past simple” before the next meeting.

Looking back, Yara felt that the project had taught everyone more than a simple solution. They had practiced listening, comparison, and shared responsibility, and they had kept “context” at the center of the conversation.
