A focused technical review

The team compared a queue with a direct call for one service dependency. If the queue had been introduced earlier, the direct call might be less fragile now. Before choosing, the team recorded the evidence, the main constraint and the next action for the dependency choice. The queue is more resilient than the direct call, whereas the call is easier to operate. Before recommending a course, they separated measured results from expectations about the dependency choice.

A decision that can be revisited

Because the dependency is asynchronous, failures can be retried without blocking the request. The decision record identified the dependency choice's trade-off, owner and review condition. We would have chosen the direct call if latency had been the only criterion. Because the wording was clear, the team could question the decision while keeping users waiting for responses in view. The next step for the dependency choice was small, observable and safe to revise.
