A mentoring question

During a staff-engineer mentoring session, Rafael reviewed a service design with a senior colleague. The engineer offered a confident design rationale based on one successful load test. Rafael asked a Socratic question: “What makes you think this example represents the wider system pattern?”

Examples and growth

The mentor gave a concrete example from another service and then offered a counterexample under a higher load. Your reasoning is clear, Rafael said; a useful growth edge would be naming the trade-off before recommending a design. The engineer practised explaining the choice in language suitable for the next code review.

A feedback loop

After the practice, Rafael asked what the engineer still found difficult. She noticed that she stated the preferred design before naming its trade-off and changed the next explanation. The support had adapted to the learner: a model came first, then a question, then room for independent technical judgment.
