Three kinds of weather

At the community garden, the volunteers know that if plants get water, they grow better. This is a general fact, so they use the zero conditional. They are planning tomorrow’s visit too. If the weather is dry, they will water the new plants. That is a realistic future possibility.

An imagined garden

One volunteer said, “If I had a larger garden, I would grow fruit trees.” He does not have that space now, so the idea is hypothetical. The group wrote all three sentences on a poster. The examples helped new members see the difference. They agreed to use one real plan and one dream in their next meeting.
