The community decision

A residents' committee had to choose a location for a summer fair. The square was central, while the courtyard was quieter but farther from the bus stop. The facilitator framed the question as a balance between access, safety, and the effect on nearby homes.

Hearing dissent

Older residents supported the square, while families near the courtyard worried about evening noise. The group heard dissent before voting and paraphrased each concern so people could correct the summary. A compromise included a shuttle from the bus stop and a quiet-time rule for the courtyard.

Choice and consequence

The committee chose the courtyard because it met the safety and noise criteria after the support plan was added. The facilitator explained that access would be harder for some families and that the shuttle would be reviewed after the first fair. The outcome was published with an invitation for comments, including from people who had preferred the square.
