A conversation across varieties
During a cultural exchange, Beatriz spoke with Omar from India and Aoife from Ireland. Their English was mutually intelligible, but some rhythms and expressions were unfamiliar to her. Beatriz listened for key words instead of comparing their speech with one imagined standard. When Aoife used a regional expression, Beatriz asked what it meant in that context. Aoife explained it without embarrassment, and the conversation continued naturally.

Later, Omar spoke quickly and Beatriz missed the final time. She said, “I understood the plan, but could you repeat the time?” Omar slowed down and wrote the time in the group message. No one treated clarification as a judgement about the accent. The group learned that global English works best when everyone helps create mutual intelligibility.
