A supervision question

During a senior clinical supervision session, Dr. Lúcia reviewed a case with a junior clinician. The trainee offered a confident case formulation based on a short symptom history. Lúcia asked a Socratic question: “What makes you think this pattern rules out another explanation?”

Examples and growth

The supervisor gave a concrete example from a similar case and then offered a counterexample with a different risk profile. Your reasoning is clear, Lúcia said; a useful growth edge would be naming uncertainty before recommending a test. The trainee practised explaining the difference in language suitable for patient education.

A feedback loop

After the practice, Lúcia asked what the trainee still found difficult. The trainee noticed that she stated the preferred option before describing the uncertainty and changed the next explanation. The support had adapted to the learner: a model came first, then a question, then room for independent clinical judgment.
