História: Pronúncia B2 e inteligibilidade

Nível: B2

A community radio invitation

Rafaela was invited to speak on a community radio program about a new walking tour. She knew the history of the neighborhood well, but she usually spoke too quickly when she felt nervous. Before the interview, she marked the important words in her notes: OLD MARKET, RIVER, and SUNDAY. She also practiced the difference between PHOtograph and phoTOGraphy.

A slower beginning

At the start of the program, Rafaela took a breath and spoke in short groups. The tour begins at the OLD MARKET, she said, and ends beside the RIVER. The host asked whether the tour happened on Saturday, and Rafaela corrected him clearly. Not Saturday; SUNDAY morning, she replied, stressing the day without raising her voice.

Connected speech in a real conversation

When she said, Could you pass it to me, please, the words flowed together naturally. She did not connect every sound; she kept the names and times especially clear. The host repeated the route correctly, so Rafaela knew that the listeners were following her.

A useful lesson

After the program, the producer said that Rafaela sounded warm and easy to understand. Rafaela realized that clear stress and careful pauses had helped more than speaking loudly. She still had a Brazilian accent, but it never stopped the story from reaching the listeners.

Notas de vocabulário

  • in short groups — Falar em grupos curtos ajuda a organizar o ritmo e evita uma sequência sem pausas.
  • stressing the day — O dia é enfatizado porque corrige a informação anterior sobre sábado.
  • the words flowed together — A expressão descreve linking e connected speech, não uma fala sem articulação.
  • easy to understand — A avaliação destaca inteligibilidade, não a ausência de sotaque.

Prática com a história

  1. Na frase The tour begins at the old market and ends beside the river, escolha quatro palavras de conteúdo para enfatizar.
  2. Explique como você diria I can meet you at the station sem enfatizar can quando ele não é o contraste.
  3. Grave duas versões de uma frase sobre um passeio: uma com todas as palavras igualmente fortes e outra com sentence stress e uma pausa curta. Diga qual é mais inteligível e por quê.
