Nível: B2

A new voice in the choir

When Luana moved to a different city, she missed the informal conversations she used to have with her neighbors. She understood the language, but she did not yet feel that she belonged anywhere. One afternoon, she heard a community choir rehearsing in a church hall and stopped to listen. The conductor invited her to sit with the group, even though she had never sung in public.

Small acts of belonging

At first, Luana said very little and worried that her accent would sound strange. Then another singer asked about a song from her hometown and listened with genuine curiosity. In a way, that simple question changed the room for Luana; she was not only a newcomer anymore. She began to suggest songs and helped arrange chairs before rehearsals.

Motivation and uncertainty

Luana's motivation was not simply the wish to perform well. To some extent, she wanted to sing, but she also wanted a reason to leave home and meet people. She was still uncertain about her future in the city, yet the weekly rehearsal gave her a steady point in the week.

A difficult performance

Before the first public performance, two singers became ill and the group had to change the arrangement. The choir showed resilience: they simplified the songs, rehearsed again, and asked the audience to sing along. The performance was not perfect, but Luana realized that belonging did not require perfection.

  1. Acrescente nuance com To some extent: Luana joined the choir because she wanted to perform. She also wanted to meet people.
