A question about the library

Lucas had five minutes to argue that his neighborhood library should stay open later twice a week. He began with the question rather than a long introduction: who can use a library if it closes before dinner? The main point I want to make is that a small change in the schedule could widen access, he said.

Two reasons and an example

First of all, students and people who work during the day would have time to borrow books or attend a class. Another reason is that the library could become a safe place for neighbors to meet after work or school. For example, a weekly conversation circle could welcome people who rarely attend cultural events.

A fair concern

Admittedly, longer hours would require more volunteers and a small increase in the electricity bill. That said, Lucas did not think the community had to choose between a perfect plan and no plan. The library could try two evenings for three months, record attendance, and ask residents what they thought.

Conclusion and questions

To sum up, Lucas supported a limited trial because it could make a shared resource more useful without creating a permanent obligation. When someone asked whether every resident would benefit, he answered, That is a fair question; I would distinguish between helping more people and helping everyone equally. The group did not decide immediately, but they agreed that a small trial was a practical next step.

  1. Una com Admittedly e That said: The trial needs volunteers. It can still begin on a small scale.
  2. Crie uma tese e dois argumentos em inglês para uma questão comunitária, usando The main point I want to make e First of all.
  3. Responda a uma pergunta difícil sem inventar certeza, usando I do not have enough information to say e um próximo passo.
