A disagreement about the community garden

The community garden committee disagreed about whether to add a children’s play area. Some residents wanted more space for vegetables, while others wanted a place for families. The discussion became tense when people began interrupting one another. Rosa agreed to facilitate the conversation.

A clear frame

Let’s focus on how to use the available space, not on who cares more about the garden, Rosa said. She invited each person to speak for two minutes without interruption. So far, I have heard two concerns: food production and family access. Everyone agreed that the garden should remain safe and welcoming.

A shared criterion

Could we compare the designs by safety, access and the number of beds they would remove? The group examined two drawings instead of repeating the same arguments. One design kept a narrow path and added a small play area near the entrance. The other design protected more beds but left no safe place for children.

A decision everyone could accept

The committee chose the first design and agreed to review it after three months. The decision did not give every person everything they wanted, but it respected the shared criteria.
