A first conversation

At a neighborhood pottery class, Ana met a visitor who had recently moved to the area. While they waited for the teacher, Ana chose a safe topic and asked about the class. The room is brighter than I expected, isn't it?

A personal question

The visitor was friendly, but soon asked Ana where she lived and whether she lived alone. Ana wanted to stay warm without oversharing, so she paused before answering. Could you tell me whether the next activity has started? she asked, changing the subject.

A comfortable boundary

The visitor understood the signal and said that she also preferred to keep some things private. By the end of the class, Ana had put her at ease by listening and sharing only what felt comfortable. They left with a plan to meet again, although neither person felt pressured to explain more than they wanted.
