Two services, one room

The wound-care service and the medication team both requested the treatment room during the morning peak. Their stated positions conflicted, but their underlying interests were safe care and a predictable handoff. The charge nurse mapped the schedule and saw how the dispute was affecting bed flow.

Pressure and dignity

Both services were under pressure to protect patients and meet their own deadlines. The facilitator acknowledged specialty ownership on both sides instead of presenting one team as the problem. That face-saving language made it possible to discuss a different care pathway.

A workable agreement

The services alternated the first hour and reserved a second slot for urgent medication counselling. They agreed to review the arrangement after two weeks and check equity of access. The solution did not give either service everything, but it protected the interests that mattered most.
