The proposal

Last quarter, our payments service started to feel the limits of the old synchronous design. Latency on the checkout endpoint had grown to nearly 800 milliseconds during peak hours. Moreover, every new integration required a coordinated deploy with the platform team. We considered three alternatives before opening the architecture review. From a practical standpoint, only one of them was viable for the next release.

The trade-off

The first alternative kept the existing schema but added a cache layer in front of the database. In contrast, the second alternative replaced the database with a streaming pipeline. The third option split the service into smaller pieces owned by different teams. Nevertheless, splitting the service would have delayed the migration by at least two quarters. We chose the streaming pipeline for the critical checkout path.

The outcome

Consequently, end-to-end latency on the checkout endpoint dropped to around 200 milliseconds. Moreover, the platform team no longer blocks every new integration. In contrast to the old design, the new service can absorb a 5x traffic spike without manual intervention. Nevertheless, the operational cost is roughly 30% higher than before. From a practical standpoint, the trade-off is worth it for the checkout flow.

  1. Reescreva com 'moreover': 'The library is well-tested. It is also well-documented.'
  2. Reescreva com 'in contrast': 'The old job ran at midnight. The new one runs every five minutes.'
  3. Reescreva com 'consequently': 'The team enabled the cache. Latency dropped by 40%.'
  4. Complete: '___ a security standpoint, the new flow closes a known gap.'
  5. Reescreva com 'nevertheless': 'The API is stable. We should still plan for versioning.'
