Nível: B2

A neighborhood conversation

On Saturday morning, Marina joined a meeting about the small square behind her apartment building. She wanted the residents to organize a monthly cultural afternoon there. At first, she said the event should be private, but several people looked surprised. What I meant was that we should plan it ourselves before inviting the whole city, she explained.

A clearer proposal

A neighbor asked whether children and older residents would have different activities. Marina began to answer, then noticed that she was speaking too quickly. Let me rephrase that: each group can suggest an activity, and we can mix the suggestions, she said. To be more precise, nobody has to perform; people can also bring food, stories, or music.

An unexpected concern

Someone worried that a public event would create too much noise. Marina almost replied that the concern was exaggerated, but she stopped herself. What I'm trying to say is that we can start small and listen to the neighbors, she said. In other words, the first afternoon would be a trial, not a permanent change.

A shared plan

The group agreed to try the event on a quiet Sunday and review it afterward. As people left, Marina realized that correcting herself had made the proposal stronger. She had not defended every first sentence; she had made her real intention easier to understand.

  • a trial — Aqui trial significa uma primeira tentativa para avaliar uma ideia, não um julgamento.
  • review it afterward — Review significa avaliar o resultado depois da atividade.

Prática com a história

  1. Reformule com To be more precise: The event is for everyone. I mean residents can invite guests, but the organizers need to know how many people are coming.
  2. Reformule com In other words: The first meeting is only a chance to test the idea before we commit to a regular schedule.
  3. Use What I'm trying to say is para explicar que uma tradição pode mudar e ainda continuar importante.
